On the way down to Charleston last week, Graham had a few meltdowns. Most of them in the car. On the last day, we spent the morning on the beach again. Before we left the beach, Rick told Graham, “Now, when we are in the car on the way home, think of all the fun you had at the ocean.” He had so much fun that morning; he tried to eat ate sand, danced in the ocean, waved at people, splashed water, laughed, etc. Memories I hope I never forget.
Rick’s statement was so simple, but so poignant, too. It can be applied to all ages of life, not just when you are a 13 month old strapped in a car seat for hours.
When something in life makes you sad, bitter, anxious, simply think of the ocean.
Think of the joy of the ocean. Think of family at the ocean.
Think of dogs running along the sand just as the tide rolls in tickling their feet. Think of dolphins in the distance. Think of seagulls, and parasailing, and boats.
Think of ocean sunrises and sunsets.
Since we’ve been back home, whenever I’ve felt a little overwhelmed, I’ve used this “think of the ocean” technique. Not only does it help me relax and focus, but it also brings me back to the sweet memories and fun we had.
I hope you remember to think of the ocean, too, when life gives you a little too much to handle.
