I’ve debated on posting this for many reasons. One of which is that I don’t want people to think I’m preaching to them.
Then, I thought, “Well, if it can help ONE person, then that’s wonderful.”
So, I’m posting this in the hope that it can help at least one person.
Last summer, I went to the dermatologist to get a few moles looked at. They were just a bit darker than all my other moles, so I wanted to get them checked out. The dermatologist took them off right away.
She called about a week later and said one of the moles was a moderately dysplastic nevi. Click here to read the specifics on that.
Basically, it meant that if left alone it could become cancerous, and she needed to remove more of the area around the mole to make sure she got out all of the abnormal cells.
And that made me cry!
See, I am a hypochondriac about two things: my car & my skin.
I’m always worried about my car breaking down, and about funny looking moles. I had a mole removed in 2010, that was just mildly abnormal, so I check my skin like a hawk now.
I have been in the tanning bed a handful of times years ago, and I was pretty good about putting sunscreen on, so this was a shock to me. I have fair skin and I like it! I try to take care of it and then the fact that I had a mole that has a greater chance of creating cancer scared the daylights out of me!
Thankfully, she removed enough and got clean margins. Now, I have to get my skin checked out regularly, just in case. And I always wear sunscreen now!
The point of this is with the warmer weather right around the corner, please, please, PLEASE, wear sunscreen! (Which, you are supposed to wear sunscreen all year round. So wear it all year! ;) ) I love the sun, too, but I know that it can really damage you in the long run. So, wear sunscreen and remember to reapply! And definitely DON’T use a tanning bed! You will have wrinkles prematurely, and have a MUCH, MUCH higher risk of cancer. Click here to learn more about skin protection.
I know a lot of people really pride themselves on being tan, so just get a spray tan. You will be taking care of your skin, while still being tan.
Trust me, even the slightest chance of cancer isn’t fun. I can’t even imagine paying to go to a tanning bed anymore; it’s like paying for an increased risk of cancer, and possibly even cancer.
And if you have any strange looking moles, definitely get them checked out. It’s better to do it now, than wait a few years when it could develop into something more.
