One of my favorite things to do is look at old photographs. It’s certainly not anything miraculous, and it’s probably something a lot of people do. When I see an old photograph of me that I remember, it takes me back to that time and place. I enjoy remembering specific days, moments, and holidays through photographs. When I see an old photograph of me that I don’t have a memory of, I take every inch of the photograph in. I look at who, if anyone, is in the photograph with me. I like to guess what happened just as the shutter snapped the memory. It also leads to interesting conversations with family and friends about certain images.
When I first looked at the images below, it hit me.
I am photographing for Alex.
Yes, I am photographing for his parents and siblings, too, but mostly for Alexander. I know one day, in ten or fifteen years, he will see the images in photo albums or in his baby book and truly study them. He may even ask his family about that day in the park, and what kind of baby he was. He will laugh at their stories of him, and probably make fun of everyone’s outfits being “so 2015.” Thinking of those future conversations surrounding these images makes me smile. I hope he enjoys learning about his “younger self” through these photographs when he gets older.
What a privilege it is to photograph memories!
Have a wonderful and safe weekend!
